Tucked away in a little corner of Conowingo, MD is a meandering, legacy farm that was kept alive by the dream of a little boy who wanted to take his family farm and make it new again. The little boy grew up, and the farm was sold, but Mark kept nourishing that dream until it became a reality in 1992. He and his wife, Robin, shared a vision about a working, organic farm that would offer healthy foods for children just like theirs, and be a place of learning about how to eat and live well. As it had not been in use since the 60’s, there was a ton of work on their plate to make that dream come true, but they took in stride, one baby step at a time.

They began by repairing one section at a time, and studied how to raise beef, wanting organic and healthy meat to sell to families. Next came chickens, which arrive at the farm within a few days of being hatched so they meet the organic standards for their care and wellbeing. The next ten years as their family developed, they added more repairs and other food products. When their daughter became interested in meat rabbits as a 4 H project, they fell in love with the benefits and taste of rabbit meat, so now offer that seasonally at the farm. They added turkeys to offer an alternative to store bought meat, and grew quickly into needing their own farm store and online catalogue.
When one of the children developed health challenges, Robin enlisted the help of her mother-in-law to learn simple ways to preserve food, and became an expert at canning, as well as preparing home cooked meals. That grew into a thriving catering and cooking part time business that she manages while overseeing farm production. As the farm has grown, she felt led to add a commercial kitchen so that the farm could offer cooking classes and sell products straight from farm to table. The children have been an active part of the farm’s growth over the past twenty years, so that Mark could continue to work full time while continuing his vision. One son helps often with daily repairs, and the college age children help as time allows. Neighbors and friends also pitch in from time to time, making sure that high quality products are always available for you.

Much of what Rumbleway Farms offers is limited, due to the size and nature of their family run farm, so it is important to check their website for upcoming classes and farm food items, such their beef csa which offers different sized cuts of beef, chicken, pork, eggs and even scrapple. Poultry, lamb and rabbits are more seasonal, so visiting their Facebook page is helpful, as well. Dinners, classes and sale items can all be seen from either site. Once you stop in and try some of their certified organic farm items, it will be easy to see how the farm motto is being instilled daily so that “every animal deserves to have a happy and healthy life”. Check out what’s for sale either here, or see more on our Facebook .
